This ‘extreme makeover’ involved a total rebuild of a cottage destroyed by fire. |
The side facing the lake features a combination of large fixed windows for a spectacular view and smaller sliding units for ventilation. A large, multi-level deck provides plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining. |
Interior features include a kitchen opening into a spacious living room and an ‘open foyer’ above the kitchen with a balconied bedroom area. Note how the 5’ x 10’ windows afford a beautiful view of Conesus Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
| The area above the kitchen creates an atmosphere of openness. The bedrooms are on the left. |
Each bedroom has a ‘window wall’ view of the lake with smaller windows for ventilation.

The living room is designed to focus on either the view over the lake or the fireplace/entertainment center on the left.

This Livonia, NY project brought together all the additional elements a couple wanted to have in their house but didn't. |
Approximately 480 square feet of living area was added to an existing living room by removing the exterior wall indicated by the red line. |
One structural column was necessary to support the weight of the second story. To make a more aesthetically pleasing look, two columns were used with glass shelves to create an interesting feature.
| A panoramic view of the whole new room showing the furniture groupings: one facing the new fireplace with custom mantel and wood surround; the other facing the entertainment center. |
A flat-screen TV is surrounded by custom cabinets, drawers and open shelving built to the homeowner’s specification to accommodate designated items.
As part of the project, an outside entrance was constructed between the
family room and porch to provide easy access to the basement for large or bulky objects. |
A screened-in porch, attached to the expanded family room, provides a nice, bug-free way to enjoy summer evenings.

This project was the addition of a completely new second story over an existing home. The homeowners also elected to stay in their home during construction, a challenge successfully met by hard work by our staff and trade partners, a well-designed plan by architect Tom Doughty, and helpful input from the owners during planning and construction. Work began the day after Labor Day 2007, and the second story structure was installed, weather-tight, in four working days. Total construction time was forty-three working days. |
| Day One - Removal of the existing roof. |
Day Two - The second floor deck is leveled and built. Plumbers and heating/AC contractor run necessary lines before sub-floor is laid. |
| Day Three - All exterior walls framed and set in place. |
Day Four - Trusses set, and roof sheeted and shingled. The door opening is a temporary lengthening of a future window, and was used for access to the work area to keep dust and debris out of the lower level during the majority of construction. |
| A powerlift chair provides access to the new second floor addition for anyone needing help climbing stairs. |
A Universal Design shower includes a seat and waist-level controls. |

This project involved extensive redesign of a home in Livonia to add features missing from the original house. The homeowner wanted to add a garage, extra bedroom, extra bathroom and a family room; and to modernize the kitchen and combine two small bedrooms into a master suite with its own bath. |
The completed project from the exterior. |
A new Wood-Mode Brookhaven kitchen combines modern features with a door which matches the original style of the house. |
One of the interesting features of this project is the use of an extensive 3-level stairway and handrail system connecting the original house to the new addition. |
Stained French doors lead into the new family room and its focal point – a gas fireplace with custom-built stonework and mantle.
Note the tops of the doors and crown molding, which were designed to match the woodwork and trim in the older part of the house. |
